The Purple Martin Capital of Iowa!
Council Bluffs is the Purple Martin capital of Iowa! Purple Martins are the largest type of swallow, with an average size of 7-1/2 inches with a 15 inch wingspan. Weighing in at 1-1/2 to 2 ounces, these birds live on a steady diet of flying insects. They can eat an estimated 2,000 mosquitos a day! They are the only bird species in the world that is almost totally dependent on human beings to provide nesting sites. Come watch the birds return to Council Bluffs this spring, in particular to the martin houses in Bayliss Park!
